Photo Policy

Here is the current policy on using photos on this website. It was prompted by the RE committee and enacted by the Deacons in consultation with other leadership boards in April 2014:

Photos of Members and Friends engaged in church activities may appear on the church’s public website, where they may be found and indexed by search engines such as Google. People in the photos will not be identified by name. If you do not want your or your children’s photos to be used in this way, please opt out by informing the church administrator by email, in writing, or in person.

Alternatively, if you don’t want your photos to be posted, you can email the . He and the church administrator, with the assistance of the RE committee, will work to make sure your wishes are honored.

Background

The previous policy on the use of people’s photos on uugroton.org was put in place in 2006-2007, when Facebook was just beginning its meteoric rise. The policy was never formally written out and posted; it was a verbal agreement among the Deacons, Trustees, and DRE at the time; Rev. Kemler; the webmaster; and Bob Lotz as frequent community photographer. Here is the essence of that former policy:

No photos of Members or Friends will appear on the public website. Any such photos will be posted only in the Members private area, where they cannot be found or indexed by search engines. Photos of children will not be posted, even in the Members area.

That policy had been growing increasingly out of step with the times. Other churches’ websites are festooned with ever-changing galleries of photos of people engaged in church activities. Our site began to look a little lifeless and sterile in comparison. Individuals publicly post photos (and videos) of themselves and their children by the millions on Facebook, Instagram, Flickr, YouTube, and dozens of other sites. It was time to modernize.
