There is no dress code here. You are as likely to find people wearing blue jeans as you are people wearing more formal clothing. Some of the kids wear their “Sunday Best” and some regularly wear fairy princess attire or Halloween costumes no matter the season. Recently, we all wore our pajamas! Come as you are.
Yes. We have an elevator and two wheelchair accessible pews at the front of the sanctuary. There are also wheelchair-accessible bathrooms located on the first and second floors of the East Wing. The Greeters and Ushers can direct you. If your child has accessibility needs, please contact Liz Davis-Chaffin, Director of Religious Education.
We warmly welcome children at First Parish Church. There is child care for infants and toddlers through age 3.5 years old beginning at 9:50 AM on the second floor of the East Wing. You are welcome to take children to the nurseries at any time during the service or keep them with you in the Sanctuary. If you do attend services with an infant or young child, you may want to sit in the back of the church if you can make a quick exit should the need arise. The service is broadcast in the vestry, the large room directly beneath the Sanctuary and you are welcome to listen to the service there. There are also soft “pew pouches,” full of quiet toys in every pew (these were made by our older church school children). Church School meets almost every Sunday for children ages 3.5 years through 6th grade or age equivalent. Visit our Religious Education page for more information. Youth are also very welcome on Sunday mornings. Youth may wish to stay in the sanctuary for the whole service or join the Teen Alternatives discussion group in the First Parish Library. Each Sunday you will find a Religious Education Greeter located at an information table on the first floor of the Meeting House. The RE Greeter can help you find the nurseries, church school classrooms, provide you with an RE Visitor Registration Form, and answer any questions you might have.
Not unless you wish to. There is time at the beginning of the service when everyone is invited to stand up and greet their neighbors but this, like all aspects of our service, is voluntary. You can simply remain seated if you don’t want to introduce yourself to anyone.
The worship leader leads everyone through the service and will invite you to stand up or be seated and tell you where to look for the words to the songs and hymns. We try to make it very easy to follow along. The tone of our service is friendly and informal so you don’t need to worry about making a “mistake.” No one will even notice.
We would be happy to tell you more. Sign one of the guest books located by the front and side doors to be put on our mailing list. There is a Newcomer’s Table located on the stage in the Vestry (the big room beneath the Sanctuary) with lots of printed information.
