Summer Worship Services 2013

During the summer months, informal Sunday services are offered on the first floor of the main church building — the coolest place in town, most summers. These are lay-led services, and they start at 10:00 am. (For the record, here are 2012 – 2011 – 2010 – 2009 – 2008 – 2007 – 2006.)

Child care is not provided, but in the past people with small children have gotten together to arrange to swap care. Please if you want to work with other parents to arrange such a cooperative.

June 23	Judy Anderson	Old Fashioned Hymn Sing: Join us on the first Summer Sunday to sing the old hymns many of us grew up singing in Methodist, Congregational, Lutheran, and other churches that are not ordinarily sung in our Sunday morning UU services!

July 7	Jack Wool	Multicultural & Diversity Experience Through Middle and High School Literature; These samples of award-winning literature assist in building cultural awareness, empathy, curiosity, and tolerance via stories from a different point of view. They are also entertaining in their own right and can be a basis for personal growth and multigenerational discussion of key components of intercultural competence. As a welcoming congregation, we can add the building blocks to become a beloved community, extending ourselves to include a wider span of worldviews and cultures. July 14	Barbara Rich	Who Is In Charge of Your Attention? Relaxation isn't easy but it's possible. Explore Kitchen Sink Yoga.
July 21	Katharyn Dawson	The Spirituality of Nature Via the Written Word: We often turn to writers such as Anne Lamott and Annie Dillard for inspiration and spiritual enrichment. But have you ever considered looking to nature writers as resources for the journey? We'll explore the works of Sigurd Olson, Louise Dickinson Rich, and a number of other nature writers, better-known and lesser-known.
July 28	Keith Dawson	Poetry Reading: This service is a well loved tradition at First Parish. Bring your favorites poem(s) or select a poem from the many books provided.
August 4	Marcia Synnott	Time Travel: Troy, Gallipoli, Istanbul: Marcia will share what she learned from a two-week sightseeing trip to Turkey in September/October 2012. She'll discuss what she believes the recent protests in Istanbul portend. Come and share with the group the memorable trips you have experienced during the past five to ten years.
August 11	Justine Sullivan	Talking About Our UU Faith: Beyond the Elevator Speech: We’ve all had those moments talking with a new friend or colleague or even members of our own families. We get to talking about our lives and the topic of church or worship comes up. “I’m a Unitarian Universalist,” you say. And then the questions come. “What’s that again? Isn’t that the church that you can believe anything?” I think with a little practice we can get through the anxiety of those moments and really engage ourselves, each other, and the people we meet in conversation about the essence and beauty of our faith. Come, let’s practice this together.
August 18	Andrea Mason	UU in Alaska: Have you ever noticed the Alaska trip that's advertised in the back of the UUA World Magazine and wondered what it would be like to travel in Alaska with UU's from all over the country? This summer Andrea Mason will be taking that trip and promises to bring home her stories to share. The discussion will include an overview of the 4 UU Fellowships sponsoring the trip (Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and Sitka), what life is like in Alaska for people of a liberal faith, and photos of the sights and people she met along the way.
